Why You Should Start Lifting Weights

A few years ago, when I was a roly-poly girl, I convinced myself that I would never be happy in life. For me, happiness equalled thinness, and because I was far from being thin, I thought misery was my only destiny.

You think my story is heartbreaking? Listen to this: Based on research done by Statistic Brain on January 2016, 91% of women, yes 91%, are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting. While this entire statement is undoubtedly horrifying, what strikes me the most here is that women always see dieting as the only solution to transform their body. As a woman and as someone who struggled with body image, I know what dieting means. It means restricting yourself to a crazy low-calorie diet. It means giving up food that you love. And it means being down in the dumps.

But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be like that? What if I told you that you can enjoy good food and still love the body you’re in? Would you believe me? Well, it’s possible. All you have to do is grab those heavy weights and get your ass moving.

“But I don’t like the gym,” you’ll say. And do you know what I’ll say? “Shut up and listen.”

There is something magical about lifting weights:

1)    You’ll gain muscle. And don’t start telling me that you don’t want to gain muscle because you’ll look masculine and all that shit because I don’t have time to get into that. Now back to gaining muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn even when you’re at rest. In other words, building muscle increases your metabolism, which means YEY to more food!

2)    Lifting weights will give you more definition. Again, stop with the looking-like-a-man bullshit. Our testosterone levels are way too low to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Having more defined muscles means having less fat, which means more self-love – though you should definitely love yourself no matter how your body looks!

3)    Lifting weights will make you strong! Is there a better feeling than feeling strong? Start incorporating compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and set monthly goals. You’ll feel so proud once the weights start getting heavier.

4)    And the most important thing – lifting weights will make you feel like the Wonder Woman that you are! It will empower you. It will give you confidence. It will make you feel amazing. Knowing that people are sleeping while you’re busting your ass off at the gym is priceless!

I know all of this is easier said than done. But nothing in life is easy. You gotta push. You gotta fight. I promise you it’ll be worth it.
