How to Wake Up Early For the Gym

How to Wake Up Early For the Gym

If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me "How do you manage to wake up so early to go to the gym?" I would probably be a billionaire. Now I understand that waking up before 6am for whatever reason is extremely difficult. And that more often than not, you have no energy to get up from your bed, let alone go to the gym. But if you want to make this work, you need to find that inner strength within yourself, that inner motivation, regardless of how cheesy it sounds.

I've been waking up at 5:35am to hit the gym at 6am for the past year or so. Although it now comes as second nature, it wasn't always the case. The first few weeks were really really really difficult, I'm not going to lie. Every time my alarm went off in the morning, I wanted to smash it with a hammer. It was pure hell. But the more I did it, the more it became a habit and the more it became easier.

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

So how and where do you even start? Here are some tips, from ME, on how to get into the habit of waking up early and get that workout in.

1. Go to bed early

This might be a no brainer to most of us, but it still needs to be addressed. You can't go to bed at midnight and expect to wake up fresh as a daisy. It just doesn't work like that. If you're going to be serious about this waking up early thing, you're going to need to sleep for at least 7 hours. So you want to get up at 5:30am? You need to be in bed by 10:30pm. Ok?

2. Sleep with your workout clothes

Sleeping with your workout clothes on might not be the most comfortable thing, but just imagine how much time this will save you. You'll be ready to hit the gym the second your alarm goes off. If this isn't something you can picture yourself doing, at least have your workout clothes ready.

3. Keep the alarm away from your bed

Oh, this one will drive you crazy. But it's probably one of the most effective tips out there. If you keep your alarm further away from you, it'll force you to get up to turn it off. Isn't that brilliant? Just make sure you don't go back to bed. Obviously!

4. Splash yourself with cold water

As soon as you turn off your alarm head to the bathroom and splash your face with cold water. This will immediately wake you up no matter how sleepy you are.

5. Have everything ready

And when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. From your little breakfast (if you eat one) to your pre-workout to your BCAAs to your workout bag, everything has to be ready. Because the only thing you need to be thinking about is dragging your butt to the gym. Nothing else.

6. Find yourself a gym partner

Having someone to be accountable to will be a game changer, I promise you that. You just gotta find that someone. But in the event you don't find anyone, don't you worry. You can do this on your own! You're a boss!
