30 Things I Learned in 30 Years
This week, I turned 30 years old. 30 YEARS OLD. It's absolutely insane to me. I have no idea where all that time has gone. But you know what? I'm excited. I really am. I feel like my thirties will be great. I mean, there's also my baby on the way...
So as someone who's now entered a new decade of life, I really feel the need to share all the important things I've learned to date. I've obviously learned a lot, but I'm only going to share the ones I feel are the most worthy. Enjoy!
1. Everything happens for a reason
Regardless of how cliché this sounds, it's true. Everything does happen for a reason. So next time something shitty happens to you and you feel powerless, rest assured that it will all make sense in the end.
2. Sweating the small stuff is pointless
Life is not always rainbows and unicorns. People will piss you off. You'll get a parking ticket. Your husband will eat your leftovers. Just try putting things into perspective. Those things won't matter years from now.
3. Save your money
You heard me. Save your money. You'll thank me when you're older.
4. Spend your money on experiences (not things)
Number 4 goes hand in hand with number 3. Save your money so you can spend it on valuable experiences. Travel, take classes, whatever it is. Just don't spend your money on clothes and makeup.
5. Be kind
I think this one doesn't really need an explanation. So just be kind, you never know what someone is going through.
6. Friends will come and go, but family will stay forever
When people say friends are forever, I kind of want to laugh in their face. Throughout your life you'll have hundreds of friends, but they'll never be your friends forever. People change. People grow. People evolve. It's normal to drift apart. I believe you can have a handful of friends forever, but the friendship won't be the same as it was when you were all in high school. Family, on the other hand, will always be your family. And when I say family I mean your parents and your siblings.
7. You don't always need to have everything figured out
It's okay to feel lost at one point in your life. It's okay to not know what your future will be like. That's actually the beauty of it. Just because the girl next door has her entire existence mapped out it doesn't mean you need to. End of story.
8. Your health is the most important thing
Never compromise your health and your well-being. Without health you have nothing. Absolutely nothing.
9. Self-care isn't selfish
You know how on airplanes they tell you to put your own oxygen mask first? Well, it's because you need to make sure you're okay first before you can help someone else. Remember this. Take care of yourself.
10. Say no to things you don't want to do
When I was in my early twenties, I always used to say yes to everything. Why? Because I was afraid of hurting and offending others. BIG MISTAKE. Make sure you're living your life for you and not for anyone else.
11. Learn, learn, learn
Read books. Take courses. Travel. The world has so much information to offer.
12. Spend time with your loved ones
You never know what tomorrow will bring, so spend your time wisely. Spend it with the people you love the most.
13. It's okay to be different
Being different is nothing to be ashamed of. Being different is actually good. You were born to stand out not to fit in.
14. Outer appearance isn't everything
What's on the inside is much more important than what's on the outside. Also, everyone is beautiful in their own unique way.
15. A thin body won't bring you happiness
This one goes hand in hand with number 14. Happiness is so much more than a perfect face and body. You need to find happiness within yourself.
16. Never settle
Never settle for anything less than what you deserve. Never settle for a job, for a man, for a house, for whatever. You don't have to live a mediocre life.
17. Always be grateful
Did you know that being grateful is good for your health? So be grateful for everything you've got - a roof over your head, clothes to wear, food to eat, and so much more!
18. Never be afraid of seeking help
Seeking help is NEVER a sign of weakness. In fact, it's a sign of strength.
19. Try new things
Do you want to live your life to the fullest? Then try new things. Everyday, do something you've never done before.
20. Patience is a virtue
Everything great in life requires patience. Work hard, be patient, and everything else will follow.
21. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be
You need to believe that there's a higher power out there who has your best interest at heart.
22. Never be afraid to voice your opinion
Speak your truth. Stand up for what you believe in.
23. Be kind to yourself
We are known to be our own worst critics. But we have to remember to cut ourselves some slack sometimes.
24. Long-distance relationships are doable
I can definitely vouch for this one. My husband and I were in a long-distance relationship for 2 years. He was living in France while I was living in Canada. So don't let anyone tell you it can't be done.
25. Hard work pays off
Incredible things happen when you work hard. You just need to trust the process.
26. Time heals
The only thing that heals - whether it's a broken heart or a loss - is time.
27. Comparison is the thief of joy
You've heard this one a thousand times, but it won't hurt to hear it a thousand and one times. Never compare yourself and your journey to the person next to you. You don't know their full story.
28. Food is not the enemy
Food is your best friend. Food is fuel. Food is medicine. Food is everything but your enemy.
29. Stop worrying so much
Did you know that most of what we worry about actually never happens? It's a fact. Google it.
30. Nothing in life is permanent
Whenever you're having a hard time - whether it's at school or at work - remember that everything in life is temporary. My dad always use to say, "Temporary inconvenience for permanent improvement." It's honestly the best advice someone has ever given me.
