Now that I'm well into my second trimester - I'll be 16 weeks as of this Wednesday - I think it's time to share with you all of my first trimester symptoms. I have to say, I've been quite lucky when it comes to symptoms. I've heard lots of horror stories, but I'm happy to say that my experience so far has been relatively pleasant.
Week 1 to Week 4: The symptoms I experienced during my first four weeks were very light. If you read my "How I Knew I Was Pregnant Before Taking a Test" post, you know I mostly felt strange/different. Other than that, I just experienced thirst and shortness of breath. Oh! And let's not forget about those extremely vivid dreams.
Week 5 and Week 6: Those were probably the hardest weeks I had ever lived through. I was extremely nauseous from the moment I had breakfast (which was at about 8am) until about 7pm. I never threw up once, but that didn't make the nausea any less severe. Eating was just such a challenge. When I ate, I felt sick. When I didn't eat, I felt sick. It was just a vicious cycle. On top of that, I was feeling very bloated and constipated. In other words, it was true hell. And because I was so sick physically, I couldn't do all the things that I loved (e.g spend quality time with my husband, drink a cup of coffee with a friend, etc..) What I'm going to say right now will sound a little harsh to some, but I felt like those two weeks of my pregnancy had stripped me of all the things that made me enjoy life. So I became depressed. Was it antepartum depression or was it just hormones? I truly don't know.
Week 7 and Week 8: The nausea slowly started to subside. However, I was still very much bloated and constipated. My doctor had suggested increasing my fiber intake and drinking prune juice, but none of these things worked for me unfortunately. During those two weeks, I also experienced thirst (which was gone in Week 5 and 6 - go figure!) and severe headaches. To treat my headaches, I took Tylenol. If you're wondering, Tylenol is very safe to take during pregnancy. It contains acetaminophen, which is the go-to pain medication while pregnant. But obviously talk to your doctor first.
Week 9, 10, 11, and 12: Those four weeks were pure bliss. I'm not kidding. I know a lot of women are still very much sick towards the end of their first trimester, but I somehow felt amazing. I felt like a normal human being. My energy was back. My appetite was back. It was great.
And before I end this blog post, I want to briefly touch on food cravings since I've been receiving lots of questions about it. I actually haven't had any crazy and unusual cravings, which is kind of a bummer because I was kind of looking forward to it. I just find it hilarious when pregnant women do crazy things like dipping pickles in yogurt. Don't you?
