Tips For Easing Morning Sickness

I'm going to be frank with you. If you clicked on this blog post to find ways to get rid of morning sickness, you're going to be disappointed. In my personal experience, there's nothing - absolutely nothing - you can do to stop your morning nausea. The only thing you can do is alleviate it. I know that's not exactly what you wanted to hear, but that's just the reality. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. 

If you read my other pregnancy posts, you know that I experienced morning sickness (or shall we call it all-day sickness?) for about two weeks. I realize I belong to the lucky-pregnant-ladies club, but trust me when I say that I do know what it's like to feel like you're dying. And hence that's why I thought I'd share some of my best tips on how to ease pregnancy morning sickness.

*Disclaimer: These tips that I'm about to provide worked for me. This doesn't, however, mean that they will work for you. 

1. Eat frequently

I know eating is the last thing on your mind when you're experiencing morning sickness, but trust me when I say that you need to eat. The longer you keep your belly empty, the worse your nausea will be. By eating every two to three hours, you're making sure you're not letting your blood sugar drop too low (low blood sugar causes a queasy stomach.)

2. Eat carbs

If you're someone who's been body conscious for as long as you can remember, you might be startled by this piece of advice. And I get it. But let me tell you two things. First, carbs do NOT make you gain weight. It's a myth that has been debunked over and over again. And second, pregnancy isn't the time to worry about weight gain. So now, let's get back to my tip on eating carbs. When I was feeling sick, what worked wonders for me was eating fresh bread from a baker's shop (not toast bread). And if I was feeling fancy, I would eat string cheese with it. Try it!

3. Go for walks

I know, I know... it's hard to do anything when you're experiencing morning sickness. But taking a 15-minute walk and getting some fresh air after every meal was life-saving during the first trimester of my pregnancy. Just walk slow. Breath. Soak in some Vitamin C. You'll feel better.

4. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of liquids is extremely important, but did you know it's even more important when you're pregnant? The bottom line is -- don't let yourself get dehydrated because if you do, you'll become even more nauseated. I know plain water easily upsets a lot of tummies, so try diluting orange juice with sparkling water. 

So that's it in terms of my tips. If you browse the internet, you'll find hundreds of other suggestions on how to ease morning sickness. I personally tried everything from sucking on ginger candies to sniffing lemons to drinking peppermint tea. And the verdict? Nothing. Nada. The only things that helped alleviate my symptoms were the ones I mentioned in this blog post.
