How to Find Me Time
Everyday, we get so caught up in the craziness of life that we forget to take care of ourselves. From Monday to Friday we work 40 hours, if not more, to be able to afford a roof under our head and good food to eat. And when the weekend finally rolls around and we get excited about some free time, the chores come knocking at our door. It’s time for grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning – the list almost seems endless. Once those tedious tasks are completed, we are lucky if we find a few hours to spare. And when we do, we usually spend them visiting family members or friends.
For one reason or another, we refuse to spend our free time on ourselves. The possible rationale behind this is because we often feel obliged to spend it with others. We fear that if we don’t, we’ll be reproached for being careless and inconsiderate. I personally feel like that a lot of the time. During the week, I’m as busy as a bee. I spend most of my day at work and most of my evening at my local gym. And although I enjoy working out, it does seem like a second job. On Saturday, I spend the first half of the day cleaning my apartment and the second half cooking and prepping meals for the following week. Sunday is usually my day off, which I use to visit my sister and nephew. And if time allows it, I might even see a friend or two. By Sunday evening I’m exhausted getting mentally ready for another Monday.
But wait! What about your me-time, you may ask. Well, there’s typically none. I rarely take some time off mostly because when I do, I feel guilty. I feel unproductive. I’m so used to doing something around the clock that the mere thought of doing nothing constructive frightens me. For the past few years, me-time has always meant lost time. It has only been recently that I’ve had the courage to let go of that thought.
What exactly is me-time and why is it important?
Me-time is the time you spend with yourself doing something you love and enjoy. It can be anything from reading a book to watching a film to getting a manicure. Whatever it is, as long as you feel zen during that activity then that’s all that matters. Taking some me-time is essential if you want to lead a happier and healthier life, and avoid a burnout.
How do I schedule me-time?
This has to be one of the most frequent questions I am asked. Scheduling me-time is not rocket science, but it does require some kind of willpower and self-discipline.
1) Find out how much me-time you require
While some people can go days, even weeks, without taking some time off, others might need to do so more regularly. Find out what works for you by paying attention to your body and the signals it sends you.
2) Create a reminder in your agenda/smartphone
Scheduling me-time is like scheduling an important meeting with your boss. You wouldn’t cancel a meeting with your boss, now would you?
Now that you have all the information at hand, go pick up the phone and make that hairdresser’s appointment you’ve been putting off for so long.
